Description

One myceliated Chicken of the Woods (Laetiporus sulphureus) log, ready to plant.

Chicken of the Woods, also known as Sulfur Shelf, is a bright and colorful polypore mushroom that is noted for its dense, meaty, very chicken-like texture.  It can be cultivated on cut sections of logs which are planted in a shady place outdoors.  This log has been pressure treated and incubated for several months and is now covered in bright orange mycelium.  To plant, dig a hole in your preferred planting spot almost as deep as the log is long.  With clean hands or sterile gloves, remove the log from the bag, then bury the log vertically, leaving 1 to 4 inches of the log above ground.

The log should fruit approximately one year after burial, usually in mid to late summer.  Properly myceliated Chicken of the Woods logs can fruit for many years before finally breaking down–the general estimate is one year for each pound of the weight of the log.

Please note that with any developing mushroom log, there is always a chance that the log will not fruit — however, following the proper steps for placement and burial offer a very good chance of success.
